Chelsea legend Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is expecting Marc Cucurella to join Barcelona before the transfer window closes.
The Spaniard is reportedly pushing to leave Stamford Bridge, and when asked by 10bet whether Barca are favourites to sign him, Hasselbaink replied:
“I can see that happening. That’s his boyhood club. He’s done exceptionally well for Chelsea; he’s been one of their better players.”
“Barcelona needs to strengthen and they’re looking in that exact spot. Chelsea is not in the Champions League right now, so I can see it and I understand it. He’s been exceptionally good for Chelsea.”
Cucurella has several suits
Barcelona are by no means the only club weighing up a move for the left-back. Atletico Madrid are expected to provide stern competition for his signature.
The likes of Manchester City and even Manchester United have also been mentioned as potential destinations, but there is an expectation that if Cucurella is sold this summer, he will return to Spain.
Chelsea are not going to sell him on the cheap
Reports in the Spanish media have suggested that Cucurella could be offloaded for a fee between €40m (£35m) and €50m (£43m), with the defender closing in on the final two years of his contract.
However, sources closer to the Blues believe that an asking price of around £60m has been set, and it remains to be seen if the likes of Barca are willing to pay that much for him.
Their current first-choice left-back is Alejandro Balde, and it is believed that the La Liga champions would need to find a buyer for him first before making an offer for cucurella.
One of Balde’s suitors is said to be United. The Red Devils are keen on providing more competition for Luke Shaw, but they are also interested in Newcastle’s Lewis Hall and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Nathaniel Brown.
It means the chances of a move happening quickly are very low, especially as Cucurella will also be representing his country at the World Cup.
