Former Man Utd midfielder Paul Scholes expects Chelsea to sign a “new goalkeeper” to replace Robert Sanchez.

Fellow podcast host Nicky Butt described the Spaniard as a “liability” and suggested that Sanchez can’t pass out from the back. Scholes echoed his remarks:

“The way Chelsea will play, I agree. He can’t do it. I’m pretty sure Xabi Alonso will want to play that way, to build out from the back, so he will need a new goalkeeper then.”

Sanchez started 49 times in all competitions this season, including the FA Cup final earlier this month.

Who could replace Sanchez?

There have been reports in Italy that claim the Blues have revived their interest in AC Milan captain Mike Maignan.

The France international would be an upgrade on Sanchez in terms of his passing ability, and his club may be open to selling him.

Despite Maignan signing a new contract in January that will keep him at the San Siro until the summer of 2031, Milan need to raise funds after failing to qualify for the Champions League.

The Rossoneri have recently sacked manager Max Allegri and sporting director Igli Tare, so all is not well at the Serie A giants, and Chelsea could exploit that instability.

Another goalkeeper is expected to leave Chelsea

While Scholes and Butt are advocating for Sanchez’s removal as club number one, it appears as if current number two Filip Jorgensen could be on his way out of Stamford Bridge.

The BBC has confirmed that the Dane has told head of global goalkeeping Ben Roberts that he wants more first-team football.

Jorgensen is expected to have interest from other Premier League clubs, in addition to Besiktas, Genoa and Porto, who were keen on recruiting the keeper last year.
