Michael Carrick has agreed a two-year deal to continue as the permanent Manchester United head coach. <\/p>\n

The agreement also contains an option year that could mean he is in charge at Old Trafford until at least 2029.<\/p>\n

The final legal details are now being sorted and the club are hopeful of an announcement in the next 24 to 48 hours.<\/p>\n

United host Nottingham Forest on Sunday, live on Sky Sports<\/em>in their final home game of the season, where the permanent head coach traditionally gives a speech at full-time to supporters.<\/p>\n

Jason Wilcox, the director of football, and Omar Berrada, the chief executive, believe Carrick is the right person to continue leading United after an impressive 15 games during which he has secured Champions League football and earned wins against Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea.<\/p>\n

The former United midfielder had been the frontrunner for the role for some time now, with his bosses impressed by his popularity with the playing squad, his handling of the media, his inherent understanding of the heritage and size of the football club – but also, crucially, the results he has achieved on the pitch.<\/p>\n

Carrick has delivered all that was asked of him and more, and in those circumstances it was always hard to see how United could give the job to someone else.<\/p>\n

Speaking during his press conference on Friday, Carrick suggested speculation around his long-term Old Trafford future would end soon.<\/p>\n

“The future for me is going to be decided pretty soon,” Carrick told the media.<\/p>\n

“We knew that was going to be towards the end of the season, if not the end of the season, so nothing’s changed. There’s no big swing on that. Obviously whatever’s beyond that is pretty close around the corner anyway.”<\/p>\n

A host of Manchester United players have publicly backed Carrick to be given the job permanently.<\/p>\n

Amad Diallo<\/strong> said earlier this month that everyone in the dressing room would be happy to see Carrick stay on as head coach next season.<\/p>\n

“Honestly, it’s not the player who decides who is going to stay here next season, but what I can say (is) everyone is happy to have him as manager,” the United winger told Sky Sports<\/em>. “Everyone is with him.<\/p>\n

Michael Carrick has been the frontrunner for the job for some time.<\/p>\n

They have been hugely impressed with the job he had done but crucially, it’s the results on the pitch that have convinced the Old Trafford hierarchy to open talks.<\/p>\n

He has done all that has been asked of him and more in his short time in the dugout at United. But I don’t think Carrick getting the job was a given, he has earned the right with the job he has done.<\/p>\n

Manchester United have spoken to the representatives of other candidates and I expect those names to be Thomas Tuchel<\/strong>, Carlo Ancelotti<\/strong>, Julian Nagelsmann <\/strong>and Luis Enrique<\/strong>but those candidates have somewhat fallen by the wayside.<\/p>\n

Tuchel signed a new deal with England, Ancelotti the same with Brazil and we expect Luis Enrique to stay at PSG, so United’s options were narrowing at a time Carrick was firmly putting his hand up for the job and showing he was the right person for the job.<\/p>\n
