Chelsea interim head coach Calum McFarlane named Mathis Eboue on the substitutes bench for the 1-1 draw against Liverpool at the weekend.
Eboue’s father, Emmanuel, will be a familiar name to many, having played for rivals Arsenal over a number of years.
However, his son started his career at Watford before joining Chelsea at the beginning of 2025.
What position does Eboue play?
The 17-year-old can play on both flanks as well as a no.10, but he has generally been deployed on the left wing since he joined the Blues’ academy last year.
Eboue has scored 10 goals and provided 6 assists in 24 Under 18 Premier League games this season, having also had run-outs in the FA Youth Cup and the UEFA Youth League.
The teenager also recently made the step up to Under-21 level, having been involved in the Premier League 2 playoffs. He scored the winner as a substitute in the round of 16 tie against Middlesbrough in April.
He has committed his future to Chelsea
Eboue signed a professional contract when he turned 17 back in February, so the club have tremendous faith in his potential.
That has been reflected by call-ups for international duty. He was born in London, but his father played for the Ivory Coast, while he also has a Belgian mother, so he is eligible for three different countries.
However, Eboue has (so far) opted to play for the Three Lions. The winger has six caps for England at Under 17 level, and his most eye-catching performance to date came against the United States in a friendly back in November when he bagged a hat-trick during a 5-2 win.
With all that being said, it is not surprising that McFarlane opted to include the youngster in the matchday squad for the trip to Anfield, especially with the likes of Pedro Neto and Alejandro Garnacho unavailable due to injury.
